History

Early PA oil field in 1862

“Rock Oil,” or petroleum, was used by Native Americans in Western Pennsylvania for centuries in ointments and insect replants. Edwin Drake later created a steam-powered drill to discover larger reserves under the earth in Titusville, PA. This kicked off the oil rush that eventually spread across the country. His design for drilling, which was not patented, paved the way for the modern global oil industry we know today. Hotels, iron factories, and housing quickly sprang up to accommodate this new industry.

This course will take you through the land that helped shape our entire world. Help us preserve this region’s history and support the people and businesses that still call it home.
